The pay-off question comes up frequently. A couple of things to remember when trying to figure this out.

1. Time value of money. The value of money fluctuates over time with the trend generally in a downwards direction due to inflation. A dollar today will probably not have the same value as it will a year from now. Prices tend to go up. If you purchased a wind turbine today at $12,000, ten years from now that same $12,000 might only have a value of $8,000 but you still have your wind turbine and it is still producing power at 2008 rate.

2. Energy cost will continue to rise. Depending on where you live in the US your electric rate is anywhere from $0.05 to $0.21 per kilowatt. The Skystream 3.7 is about $0.10 per kilowatt based on an installation price of $18,000 over 20 years and assuming an average 12 mph wind. Places with higher average winds will see a reduction of per-kilowatt cost. If you lower the installation cost you will also lower the per kilowatt cost.

3. Investing vs. purchasing. If you were to invest the total installed cost of a wind turbine of lets say $18,000 at a 5% return after 20 years you will have $36,000 (simple interest). If you were to purchase a Skystream 3.7 wind turbine you would generate approximately 4,800 kilowatts a power a year based on an average 12 mph wind. Let’s say today’s average rate in your area is $0.11 per kilowatt and the price per kilowatt does not change for 20 years, that equates to a $10,560 savings (cost avoidance) over the same period. In other words you will save $10,560 over 20 years. Chances are extremely favorable that the cost of electricity will go up over the next 20 years, therefore, you cost savings or, rather, cost avoidance, will be higher, probably much higher. Also, for as long as you own your Skystream 3.7 and it is operational, you are insulated from the electric utilities price increases for the portion of the energy you are generating from you Skystream 3.7.

4. Increasing the value of you home. Installing a Skystream 3.7 will increase the value of your home. The general consensus from the real estate industry is home owners who properly install alternative energy devices can expect to receive a dollar for dollar return on investment if not more. There is also a less identifiable tangible benefit as well, being, the salability of your home. For example, there are two homes on the market that are comparable in everyway except for one has an alternative energy device connected to the home power grid that generates free clean power. This home stands a much better chance of selling before the other. This could equate to substantial cost savings in selling a home. What does this means for home owners? Simply they do not lose the value of their alternative energy investment when they sell their home. The home value is increased by the dollar value of their investment.

5. What happens after 20 years of expected Skystream 3.7 service life? Chances are your Skystream 3.7 will continue to function after 20 years. Although it was designed for 20 years that does not mean it becomes non-functional at the 20 year mark. If it does, most likely it can be repaired and put back into service. If it is not cost effective to repair the Skystream 3.7 and it must be replaced your total investment of installing the turbine is not lost. You will still have an infrastructure (foundation, wiring, & tower) to simply replace the turbine.

6. The intangible benefit of installing a Skystream 3.7. Installing a Skystream 3.7 is simply the right thing to do if you live in an area with available winds. Not only will you will also reduce your carbon foot print by avoiding using the energy produced by fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas), you will enjoy the peace of mind that you are doing your part in saving the environment. The wind will blow indifferent to human activity. It is up to each one of us to decide if we are going to capture the free energy or simply let it pass us by.

7. Reality check. Experts tell us buying an automobile is the worst investment we can make. After four years your automobile is worth, on average, between 15 to 25% of the original cost. Most people don’t even blink when they sign up for a loan on a $35,000 automobile. The truth of it is for about half of the cost of buying a new automobile, someone can invest in a Skystream 3.7. Investing in a Skystream 3.7 will provide a return on your investment.
